Billboard Music Awards

(Student Work)

The ask for this project was to create a 30s title spot and a 10 sec category spot for an award show of our choice. As a musician myself I chose the Billboard Music Awards and revamped the brand to make it more lively to embody the colorful nature of the music industry.

The Brand

The Billboard Music Awards is an annual event hosted by Billboard to honor the best of the best musicians that have consistently produced chart bursting tracks over the course of the year.

Unlike the Grammy Awards, which determine the winners based on votes through a jury, the BBMAs are based on album and digital sales, streaming, radio airplay, touring and social engagement of the music created.

Awards are given for the top album, artist and single in a number of different music genres.

The Rebrand

Over the decades, music has been a constant and Billboard has been the pioneer in the industry. But with emerging technologies the medium of music has evolved. This has exponentially increased the reach that music has.

Through this concept we can go along the journey of the history of music and how it has been produced. From classic vintage to global music, the sounds wave travels through the years of music production.

Moodboard

Bold fonts, with powerful colors and upbeat music resonate the excitement that the BBMAs offer in their popular award ceremony. The fluidity of the organic shapes in the background represent sound waves while the texture gives it the rustic vintage appeal of the static in older music mediums.

Fonts Used

Drescher Grotesk is a classic German geometric design, complete with the original “angled” brackets. This contrasts well with the organic nature of the shapes in the background. It is also the most alike font to that of the Billboard logo, which uses a combination of varied font in its branding. They employ a carefully coordinated suite of typefaces, including LL Brown, Lyon Display and Atlas Grotesk for headers, and Lyon Text for body copy
